Gators defend The Ally for third straight season in fall finale
WEST POINT, Miss. – For the third consecutive season, the No. 13 Florida women’s golf team won the team title at The Ally at Old Waverly Golf Club on Wednesday. It was the team’s second straight victory to finish the fall season as they finished 26-under.
Tied for the lead at 17-under with No. 8 Arkansas, Florida used a final round of 9-under for a five-shot victory over the Razorbacks. The Gators leaped the Hogs late with a 4-under stretch in the last 20 scoring holes compared to Arkansas’ +2 scoring. In the last three trips to The Ally, UF has won by a total of 22 shots (11, 6, 5) and tournament score by par of 42-under (-26, -15, -1).
All four counting scores this afternoon were under par led by Paula Francisco and Addison Klonowski’s 69 (-3). Francisco’s final 18-holes were bogey-free as Klonowski rolled in five birdies for 11 total this week. Klonowski had 38 pars, 11 birdies and four bogeys in her 54-holes as all three of her rounds were par or better (69, 72, 69). She finished 6-under and tied her career-best finish of T3 for her 13th top-25 in 15 career tournaments.
Francisco’s average of 4.50 (-6) on par5s was a tournament-leading en route to her T8 and season-best finish. After her opening round of 75 (+3), she shot 68 (-4) and 69 (-3). Also tied for 8th was graduate Megan Propeck with a final round of 70 (-2) The first-year Gator collected fall performances of T17-T8-1-T8 and team-low stroke average of 71.3.
True freshman Katelyn Huber closed her impressive first fall also tied for 8th as she earned fall finishes of 4-T21-T4-T8 and a stroke average of 71.6, second-best on the team. She logged all three rounds under par (70, 71, 71) for team-high sixth under par round this season.
Sophomore Elaine Widjaja placed T13 at 2-under as all five UF golfers in the lineup were in the red for the week.
Rounding out the Gators competing was Sophie Stevens (individual) in T44.
