SAN MARCOS, Texas – Florida State freshman Haruhi Nakatani is in a tie for second place in the individual standings, and the Seminole women’s golf team is in first place in the team standings after the first two rounds of the 14th Annual Jim West Challenge at the Kissing Tree Golf Course. Nakatani totaled scores of 70 and 68 to lead the Seminoles with a 36-hole total of 138 as the 14-team field battled 30 miles per hour winds in the morning round.

Florida State gained the lead in the first round as Nakatani and sophomore Elin Pudas Remler earned scores of 70 and the Seminoles totaled a team score of 1-under par. The Seminoles were the only team under par in the morning round.

The Seminoles finished tied with Texas A&M for the best team score of the second round. The Seminoles and the Aggies earned 8-under par team scores of 280 over the second round of 18 holes.

Florida State enters the final round of the championship on Monday with a seven-stroke lead over Texas A&M and a nine-stroke lead over Oklahoma. The Seminoles and the Aggies are the only two squads with under par team scores through the first 36 holes of the event. Maja Ambroziak of Texas Tech is the individual leader with a seven under par total of 137. She holds a one-stroke over Florida State’s Nakatani in the race for the individual championship.

“We played really well as a team in really windy conditions today,” said head coach Amy Bond. “This morning was gusty, but they held things together and played a great round. This afternoon they got things rolling and made some putts. It was great to see them put back to back under par rounds together.”

“We are excited to get back out and play in the third round. Tomorrow will be fun.”

Nakatani, who is playing in her third career event, carded scores of 70-68 for a two-round total of 138. She totaled a team-leading 10 total birdies (five in each round) and held the individual lead for much of the first round of play.

Florida State sophomore Sophia Fullbrook is in a tie for sixth place in the individual standings with a two-round total of 141 and scores of 73-68. She played her best golf in the second round of the championship as she carded a career-best score of 4-under par 68. Fullbrook’s second round score of 68 included five birdies. She totaled eight birdies in the first two rounds of play.

Sophomore Alexandra Gazzoli was the third member of the Seminoles’ lineup to finish with an under-par score in the second round. She carded a 1-under par 71 and has a two-round total of 1 over par 145.  Gazzoli is in a tie for 19th place in the individual standings.

Monday’s championship round is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. ET with the Seminoles playing with Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Houston.
