Florida and Mississippi Tie 0-0
The teams played in rain for the entire match, with the heaviest showers coming in the first half.
Florida outshot the Rebels 14-6 and were pressing for a goal right up to the end. Two corner kicks saw shots by Skye Barnes and then Katie Johnston, but both were saved by UM goalkeeper Taylor Prigge.
The Gators appeared to score in the 69th minute when Abby Gemma’s free kick from just inside the Rebel half was headed back by Addy Hess for Njeri Butts to place in from eight yards. After a video review, the goal was waved off due to offsides.
This was UF goalkeeper Paloma Peña’s second consecutive shutout and third of her season.
Today’s result gives Florida another point in the Southeastern Conference standings. With one match remaining in the league’s regular-season schedule, Florida’s 11 points places the team 11th in the SEC standings. Two teams share 12th with eight points each – Auburn and Texas A&M. Teams will be looking for points (3 points for win; 1 point for tie) next Sunday in their regular-season finales as the top 12 teams advance to the SEC Tournament.
SEC Standings
Coach Bohon Said:
“If I’m being candid, we’re really disappointed in this. I think we created enough chances, despite all the factors with the weather and the slick ground but we just didn’t put it in the back of the net. Good for our back group to keep them out of the net. Just disappointing because we needed a result here beyond the tie. We’re going to get back to work, because we’re really motivated to do more this season. We know we still have work left to do.” – Florida Head Coach Samantha Bohon
Backline Performance:
“I’m just proud of them. Because this is tough. This is a tough environment to defend in, and we had some significant wind against us in the first half, plus the slick ground and the rain. It rained literally the entire game, and then the wind shifted and went against us again in the second half. They’ve got some quick, counter attacking options, as you could see. So for us to have a shutout, I’ll never be ungrateful for a shutout, but again, I just wish we could have been a little bit better in the final third. I think we created enough chances to score, but we weren’t clinical enough to put the ball in the back of the net.” – Florida Head Coach Samantha Bohon
