ATHENS, Ga. – Alabama volleyball dropped a hard-fought five set road battle against Georgia Friday night in Stegeman Coliseum.

Alabama (9-8, 1-6 SEC) and Georgia (12-5, 4-3 SEC) traded back and forth in the opening set, with the score tied 14 times by the point it reached 22-22 late in the frame. Back-to-back points made it set point Crimson Tide and, following a service error, a Bulldog error on the next rally scored the final point as Alabama pulled out the 25-23 win. Georgia got off to a hot start in the second, opening on a 7-1 run, moving ahead by double digits at 16-6 and eventually winning the set, 25-12, to even the match at 1-1.

A 4-0 run by Alabama early in the third set made it 9-6 and a 6-0 run soon after stretched the lead to 15-8, with the Bulldogs spending both of their timeouts in the process. The cushion proved enough for the Tide to ride out the rest of the set, winning 25-16 to take a 2-1 match lead. Needing to win the fourth to extend the match, Georgia grabbed a 25-12 win to send the teams to a deciding fifth set. The Bulldogs took the early lead in the fifth, up 8-5 at the mid-set switch, but the Tide looked to fight back with a Sophie Agee kill making it a one-point game at 9-8. Alabama couldn’t tie it up however, as Georgia remained in front to win the set, 15-8, and the match, 3-2.
