Alabama Shares Opening Round Lead at Folds of Honor Collegiate

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Three Alabama men’s golfers are among the top 10 individuals to lead the No. 18-ranked Crimson Tide men’s golf team to a share of the opening round lead at the Folds of Honor Collegiate. Alabama concluded Monday’s first round action with a team score of 1-over par 285 and is tied with No. 43 Notre Dame heading into Tuesday’s second round. 

Jonathan Griz is in fourth overall to lead the Crimson Tide while Jack Mitchell and William Jennings each carded are tied for eighth.

All three rounds of the Folds of Honor will be televised on the Golf Channel, with coverage airing live in the morning (8:30-11:30 a.m. CT) and afternoon 3:30-6:30 p.m. CT). 

Individual Highlights

  • Jonathan Griz ended his day with three birdies and two bogeys, and is in a tie for third at 1-under par 70
  • Griz was one of only seven individuals to shoot under par on Monday
  • Jack Mitchell had a team-leading four birdies but also added four bogeys, while William Jennings collected a pair of birdies and a double bogey and are each tied for seventh overall
  • Mitchell leads all players on par 4 holes (-2, 3.82) and Jennings shares the lead with two others in total pars (15)
  • The duo was among only 12 players to shoot par or under
  • Connor Brown carded a 2-over par 73 while Nick Gross rounded out the UA golfers at 4-over par 75

Team Highlights

  • Starting on Hole No. 10 as a team, the Crimson Tide’s front nine consisted of a combined total of 8-over par (two birdies, six bogeys and two double bogeys), however, the Tide responded with a team score of 3-under par (11 birdies, eight bogeys)
  • UA leads the 15-team field in par 4 scoring (4.07) and total pars (61)
  • The Folds of Honor Collegiate was created to benefit the non-profit organization, Folds of Honor, that provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of military members who have fallen or been disabled while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
