Cam Miles: Great Guard Play Is In His DNA

Last Updated: August 31, 2025By

TALLAHASSEE – Florida State freshman Cam Miles was destined to play the sport of basketball, and specifically destined to play the guard position.

His dad, Jimmie Miles, played at Valparaiso and at NAIA powerhouse Robert Morris University in Chicago. His step-father, Parrish Brown, played at the University of Maryland.

It was only natural that Miles chose to play his college basketball for Luke Loucks, a point guard himself who is one of the top point guards in Florida State history (2009-12). It was Loucks that led the Seminoles to its first ACC Tournament championship game appearance in 2009 and to its first ACC Tournament title in school history in 2012.

“Coach Loucks, he was a point guard himself,” said Miles when he committed to Florida State in April of 2025. “Being coached by a point guard, that’s something every point guard should want. He’s been around all the best players in the NBA and having a head coach like that is amazing.”

From the time he first picked up a basketball when he was three-years old, Miles has called a basketball gymnasium home. His remembers following his father around as he found places to play within the basketball hotbed of Chicago, where he lived with his family for the first 11 years of his life.

“One of my earliest memories is when I was in Chicago playing in a youth league,” said Miles. “I vividly remember dunking and breaking the rim.”

From Chicago he moved to Orlando where his basketball career literally took off at rocket-like speed.

Miles’ success as a prep star led him to the famed IMG Academy where he played on its postgraduate team in 2025. With Miles in the lineup, the Ascenders were ranked among the top teams in the nation during his only season at the Bradenton, Fla., based school. He averaged 17.4 points and 5.2 assists at IMG in 2025.

It was during his high school career that he developed his basketball style.

Miles is a pass-first point guard who enjoys creating for his teammates as well as scoring and playing defense. He is an effective scorer who shoots the ball and shot better than 40 percent from the 3-point line at IMG.

It’s a style that fits him well, and a style that led him to Florida State.

After committing to Temple in September of 2024, Miles reconsidered his decision and re-opened his recruitment. It was then that Florida State began recruiting Miles.

“Coach Loucks and his staff made me a priority when I re-opened my recruiting process,” said Miles. “They came down to see me and I really clicked with the staff quickly. The coaching staff helped me understand the style of offense they were going to play and how that would help me improve.

“I feel like the offense under Coach Loucks and his staff fit my play style well,” said Miles. “Our offense at Florida State gives me the opportunity to create for not only for myself but for my teammates as well.”

Loucks, who ranks 10th in school history with 391 career assists, and fourth with 136 career games played, developed a storied history while wearing the garnet and gold. He totaled 13 assists in Florida State’s ACC Tournament-clinching victory over North Carolina on March 11, 2012 – the highest assists total in an ACC Tournament game in school history.

“As I was putting my staff together, Cam had everything we wanted in a player and he was a priority,” said Loucks. “From the first day we started putting together a wish list, we wanted him to be a Seminole. We love the way he gets his teammates involved in every possession – that’s his mindset. Cam also has some Chicago-toughness in him that we are going to work to make one of the characteristics of our program.”

Miles, who moved to the state of Florida when he was in the sixth grade, is as comfortable in the classroom as he is on the basketball court.

“Academic success had always mattered to my mom,” said Miles. “She’s made education a top priority for me and my siblings.  As the oldest, I want to be a role model and show them the importance of earning a college degree. Earning my degree from Florida State would mean a lot because that’s the main thing my mom preaches to me and my sibling.  My mom is the reason why I work hard both on and off the court at Florida State.

“Coach Loucks and his staff expect us to perform in the classroom before we ever step on the court – and I take that seriously. Big plays start with strong grades.”

Miles started his academic career at Florida State by earning an A in his first class as a Florida State student-athlete during the Summer of 2025.

Miles is looking for the same beginning to his basketball career at Florida State.

“The best thing about our program has been building chemistry with each of my teammates every day,” said Miles. “I’m looking forward to winning and showing everybody how good Florida State basketball can be.”

He’s also looking forward to following a similar journey of his father and his stepfather, who were also both guards during their collegiate playing careers.

“I know that my dad and step dad played at the highest level,” said Miles. “I want to follow in their footsteps.”

For Cam Miles and Florida State, following in the footsteps and standing on the shoulders of those who paved the way for success is a story that will be begin on November 4 at the Donald L. Tucker Center in the Seminoles’ 2025-26 season-opener.
