GAINESVILLE, Fla. –  Five different Gators scored Sunday – including three hitting their first collegiate goals – to give Florida a 5-0 win over North Florida at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium.

Tonight’s Scoring:
Florida’s scoring started when Kai Tsakiris was awarded a free kick just above the box in the 26th minute. She took the kick, which had a slight deflection off the head of an Eagle and scored at the far post corner.

Less than a minute and a half later, another freshman goal put the Gators up 2-0. An Eagles clearance attempt from the top of the box was pounced on by Florida’s Sophia Sindelar midway through the UNF half. She drove toward goal before hitting a left-footed shot from 26 yards.

The first half’s final goal started with Abby Gemma’s free kick in the 40th minute. The ball she sent was touched backwards by Addy Lang for Lena Bailey just inside the box. Bailey move to the top center of the box before hitting a right-footed shot to the far corner.

Florida opened and closed the second half with goals. Scoring started quickly with Njeri Butts’ hitting her second collegiate goal in as many matches. Megan Hinnenkamp touched the ball out to Addy Hess located just outside the box. Hess’s centering ball was touched in by Butts’ raised right foot from the top of the six-yard box.

Florida finished with another first-time Gator goal in the 86th minute by redshirt junior Tatum O’Coyne. Brinley Murphy found Amelia Malkin wide of the box. The centering ball from Malkin found O’Coyne in the six-yard box where she got the touch just before an Eagle defender and goalkeeper could make the stop.

DYK:

  • Freshman Kai Tsakiris scored tonight’s opening goal directly off free kick from the top of the box. The last time a Gator scored off a direct free kick? Oct. 21, 2021 when Nicole Vernis scored on a 19-yard free kick in a 4-3 loss at Georgia.

Weather Delay – Again!
All the matches of this season were delayed by lightning. For the August 14 opener in Tallahassee, that match was twice delayed for a total of 2 hours and 15 minutes. Thursday, the players were pulled from the pitch after just over 12 minutes of action and returned to play 2 hours and eight minutes later. Tonight, lightning in the area held up the start of the match 15 minutes.

Coach Bohon Said:
On this evening’s win:
“It’s just wonderful to see things start to come together, both for some of our players that have been here for a while – they’ve really invested in their development – and then our newcomers coming in and making an instant impact. We’re not afraid to say we’re willing to give young players an opportunity, if they’ve earned it, and you saw that tonight so that really exciting.

“Also equally excited about a shutout, I think that’s something that’s really important for us. I don’t want to overlook our back line, our keepers, and we rotated people in there, so I thought they did a great job.

“We played everybody that was healthy again tonight, which we also did Thursday night. That enables us to have options. There’s certain match ups that will suit certain players, but also just the rotation. So if somebody’s having a good night or somebody’s having an off-night, we have some depth. So we’ve been really intentional to try to develop that early in this non-conference play so that hopefully it’ll pay off in big games like next Thursday and obviously in SEC play.”– Florida Head Coach Samantha Bohon
