Alexia Dizeko and Sarah Deng Represent Florida at 2025 FIBA AfroBasket
Two Gators are competing in the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket Tournament, further expanding their international experience before the start of the 2025-26 season.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida women’s basketball program has had several student-athletes compete this summer for their respective home countries overseas. Alexia Dizeko and Sarah Deng are among those Gators and have recently started competing in Africa. Dizeko earned a roster spot on Angola’s national team, and Sarah Deng is representing South Sudan.
During Angola’s Group C contest vs. Egypt on July 27, Dizeko delivered a standout performance with 11 points, along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists, standing as the only Angolan player to score in double digits. Dizeko then followed up with a 21-point outing against Côte d’Ivoire on July 28. Dizeko also led on the defensive end, securing eight rebounds for Angola.
Dizeko and Angola are set to face Cameroon in their next matchup on Wednesday, July 30. The game is to qualify for the AfroBasket quarterfinals and will tip off at 5 pm ET inside Palais des Sports in Treichville, Côte d’Ivoire.
Florida is also being represented in the African-based tournament by Deng on Team South Sudan. Deng and her teammates are making a historic debut in the tournament, as the country qualified for the first time via a wildcard. Deng has seen action in two group-phase games, logging a combined 43 minutes.
In South Sudan’s initial matchup on July 26, Deng led the team in assists and steals. Deng distributed three assists and snagged two steals against Mali. Most recently, the South Sudanese played Cameroon, falling just short at 70-63 in the Group Phase. South Sudan’s next challenge will be on July 30, against Egypt.
The FIBA AfroBasket is the main basketball continental championship for national teams in Africa and is organized by FIBA. The tournament is held every four years, and the 2025 edition marks the 31st year of competition. For more information on AfroBasket and the national teams, follow this link.
