Paxton All-Star Team Surprised by Unexpected Benefactor

Walton County – July 14, 2025 – The Paxton All-Star Girls Softball Team received an unexpected surprise at last week’s regular meeting of the Walton County Board of County Commissioners (BCC). Coach Daniel Herring, additional coaches and team members were there to seek funds for travel expenses so they could go to Port St. Lucie, Florida for four days to compete for the state championship title.

Coach Herring allowed three of the girls to speak on behalf of the team. After their presentation, Herring said they were asking for $4,840 to cover hotel costs for the 11-member team.

District 1 Commissioner Dan Curry asked County Administrator Brian Kellenberger if the funds could be drawn from the BCC’s discretionary funds and was told they could. Commissioner Tony Anderson suggested raising the amount to $6,000 to cover meals, too.

While the discussion was going on, a voice from the audience called out, “I’ll donate the $6,000!” The team’s unexpected benefactor turned out to be south Walton County resident Todd Roark.

Commissioner Brad Drake quipped, “We’ve got the private sector in here now!”

“Mr. Roark,” asked Commission Chair Donna Johns, “did you say you would donate the $6,000?”

“Yes, I’ll donate the $6,000,” he said.

“Second!” called out Commissioner Drake, which drew chuckles from the Board.

Commissioner Johns said, “Mr. Roark, bless your heart!”

The audience applauded and the grateful Paxton team and coaches thanked everyone and then posed for a picture with Roark.
