The Friends of Radio Hall of Fame celebrates the people who make Georgia radio great. This year’s honorees include: David Dickey (President/CEO of Dickey Broadcasting), Steve Hegwood (Founder/CEO of Core Communications and Core Radio Group), Kevin and Taylor (pair who introduced Atlanta to Contemporary Christian radio on 104.7 The Fish), Mike Lawing (43-year radio veteran who helped expand iHeart and Clear Channel stations across Georgia), Scott MacLeod (40-year radio veteran at WMVG/WKZR in Milledgeville), Austin Rhodes (host of “The Austin Rhodes Show” since 1992), Bert Weiss (host of “The Bert Show” since 2001) and Howard.
Host Jim Powell of the Atlanta Braves Radio Network will help pay tribute to this year’s honorees at the City Springs Center in Sandy Springs on Aug. 23.
Howard, a 1984 University of Georgia graduate, has helped call Georgia football and basketball games for the last 31 years. He began his relationship with the Bulldog football team as a color analyst alongside the late Larry Munson in the 1993 season. In 2007, Howard broadcast play-by-play action in all of Georgia’s road football games before becoming the program’s primary voice by the third game of the next season.
Howard has also served as Georgia’s primary play-by-play reporter for the Bulldog men’s basketball games since the 1997 season. Some of his first action in Georgia athletics came announcing baseball games from 1990-96.
Neil “Hondo” Williamson is also on the Georgia football radio team and was a Class of 2022 honoree.
