Trio of All-America Honors Highlights First Day of NCAA National Championships
EUGENE, Ore. – A trio of Alabama track and field student-athletes accumulated All-America honors on the opening day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
The men’s shot put duo of Christopher Crawford (12th; 18.94m | 62-1.75) and Trevor Gunzell (14th; 18.91m | 62-0.50) gathered top-15 finishes in their first of two events during the week. The pair will return to Hayward Field Friday for the men’s discus event final, alongside teammate Christopher Young. On the track, Dismus Lokira captured yet another top-15 finish for the Tide, placing 11th in the men’s 10,000m (29:13.51) for his NCAA Championships debut.
In the preliminary track events, the Crimson Tide advanced to event finals in the 400m and the 4×400-meter relay. Samuel Ogazi (400m, 44.77) clocked the fastest 400-meter time of the entire semifinals, before he returned to the track as a member of the 4×400-meter relay team which finished second in its heat, via a 3:03.58 performance.
Thursday will feature the start of the women’s competition, with reigning steeplechase national champion Doris Lemngole highlighting the day. Lemngole’s semifinal heat will begin at 6:38 p.m. CT to kickstart the Crimson Tide’s evening of six total events, three track events and three field events.
