Alabama Captures National Championship Berths in Five Events on Third Day of NCAA East First Round
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On the third day of the NCAA East First Round meet, the Alabama track and field program saw 10 student-athletes, across five events, punch their ticket to Eugene, Ore., for next month’s National Championships, June 11-14.
The Crimson Tide shot put duo of Mye’Joi Williams (17.18m | 56-4.50) and Treneese Hamilton (16.92m | 55-6.25) started the day for the Crimson Tide with a pair of national qualifications. Later, in the men’s discus, Christopher Young found himself in 13th-place after two throws while his teammates Christopher Crawford (58.91m | 193-3) and Trevor Gunzell (57.71m | 189-4) watched with top-12 finishes already locked in. On Young’s final attempt, he launched a 59.10-meter throw (193-11) to finish in sixth place and give Alabama three national berths in discus alone.
On the track, Ezekiel Pitireng used a PR-setting performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:40.37) to log a top-three finish in his heat and advance to the national meet. In the NCAA’s 400-meter quarterfinal, Samuel Ogazi finished as the East Region champion, as his 44.43 time broke the Hodges Stadium facility record. It was Ogazi’s fastest time in the event since the finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Alabama’s 4×400-meter relay squad (Donald Chiyangwa, Peter Diebold, Ogazi and Oussama El Bouchayby) ended the day with a fourth-place finish and a time of 3:02.78.
The women’s competition will conclude Saturday, with Williams set to compete in the discus at noon CT for a chance at securing her second ticket to the national meet. Katelyn Adel and Miracle Ailes will get underway in the high jump at 2:30 p.m.
Saturday will also feature the women’s event finals on the track, as three Crimson Tide runners look to advance to the national meet. Precious Nzeakor will run in both the 100-meter (5:35 p.m.) and 200-meter (6:50 p.m.) races, while reigning champion Doris Lemngole and Lilly Walters toe the line for the 3,000-meter steeplechase (4:40 p.m.).
