No. 4 Gators Fall to No. 1 Tar Heels in NCAA Semifinals
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The No. 4 Florida lacrosse team (20-3, 5-0 Big 12) fell to No. 1 North Carolina (21-0, 9-0 ACC) in the NCAA Tournament Semifinals by a score of 20-4 on Friday afternoon.
UF jumped out to 1-0 and 4-2 leads in the first quarter, forcing the Tar Heels to have five turnovers early. The Gators had four different goal scorers as Kaitlyn Davies, Frannie Hahn, Clark Hamilton and Jordan Basso each logged a goal, with Gianna Monaco recording two assists.
Davies recorded five ground balls and five caused turnovers, setting a new program record for most caused turnovers in an NCAA Tournament game.
Georgia Hoey and Elyse Finnelle each made five saves in net.
How It Happened
First Quarter
- After winning the opening draw, the Gators struck first at the 14:01 mark when Frannie Hahn slithered around the cage and placed it in the back of the cage off the pass from Monaco, to go up 1-0.
- North Carolina answered with two goals, before Davies took a strong dodge to her right which she buried into the back of the net to tie it at 2-2 with 6:17 to play.
- Florida closed the quarter with two consecutive goals, first off an unassisted dodge by Hamilton, followed by a woman-up goal from Basso on the edge of the crease off the pass from Monaco. Florida led 4-2 after one.
Second Quarter
- Despite 10 North Carolina goals, the Gators caused two turnovers and made three saves in the quarter. They went into half down 12-4.
Second Half
- Florida was outscored 8-0 in the second half, as UF fell by a score of 20-4.
- The Gators scooped seven ground balls and caused seven turnovers in the half.

Defensively we were coming up with some big stops to get our attack the opportunity to score. That first quarter, we were cooking.”
