SAN DIEGO – A small plane crashed in a San Diego neighborhood early Thursday morning, authorities said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene just before 4 a.m. PT in the Murphy Canyon neighborhood, near Sculpin Street and Santo Road, just off the 15 Freeway, after several homes caught fire.

The San Diego Police Department is urging the public to avoid the area as first responders work to secure the site and gather information.

As a precaution, residents on neighboring streets have been evacuated. Authorities advise anyone who smells jet fuel or discovers debris to immediately contact police. A temporary evacuation site has been established at a nearby elementary school.

According to the National Weather Service, visibility in the area dropped to about 2 miles due to low clouds and fog.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the Cessna 550 crashed near the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. The number of people on board is unknown at this time. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate.
