TALLAHASSEE – The No. 5 Florida State softball team (48-9) dominated from start to finish in an 8-0 win in six innings over USF (44-15-1) on Saturday afternoon at JoAnne Graf Field. With the win, FSU advanced to its 12th consecutive regional final.
Yesterday’s run-rule win over Robert Morris and today’s run-rule win over USF was just the third time FSU has run ruled back-to-back opponents in the NCAA Tournament. FSU run-ruled Bethune Cookman and USF in the 2019 Tallahassee Regional and Howard and USF in the 2022 Tallahassee Regional.
Sophomore Ashtyn Danley got the start in the circle and was terrific. Danley went five innings and allowed just one hit. She improved to 13-1 and has not allowed an earned run in her last 12 innings which spans over her last five appearances.
After a scoreless first inning, the Noles looked to be going down quietly in the second inning with back-to-back strikeouts, but Jaysoni Beachum was hit by a pitch to put a runner on base for Amaya Ross. Ross drove the first pitch she saw to dead center field for her fourth home run of the year and her first home run since April 12 at Cal.
The offense got back to work as Isa Torres and Jahni Kerr hit back-to-back singles in the third to put runners on the corners. Katie Dack drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases for Michaela Edenfield who muscled one out to shallow center to score Torres. Hallie Wacaser picked up a RBI on a groundout to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Noles went down quietly in the fourth but continued to apply the pressure in the fifth. Torres led off the inning with a single, and Kerr drew a walk to put a couple of runners on. Dack singled to left field to score Torres to give FSU a commanding 5-0 lead after five.
FSU wasn’t done though as Ross led off the sixth inning with her second home run of the game. Saturday was Ross’s first career multi-home run game. Ross is just the fourth player in school history to record a multi-home run game in the NCAA Tournament. She joins Cassidy Davis (2021), Anna Shelnutt (2017) and Jessi Warren (2015).
The bats stayed hot as Angelee Bueno singled up the middle on the eighth pitch of the at bat. Shelby McKenzie came up and launched her first career home run over the center field wall to put the Noles in run-rule territory. Jazzy Francik entered the game in the sixth and shut the door with a couple of strikeouts.
FSU will play tomorrow at noon against the winner of game five tonight which is set to begin at 6 p.m.
