BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 2 Florida State baseball team fell to Cal 5-0 in the second game of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Stu Gordon Stadium in Berkeley, California.
The Seminoles (35-11, 15-8 ACC) were held to six hits, all singles, and were shut out for just the second time this season.
After FSU won Friday night’s opener, the two teams will play for the series win on Sunday afternoon. Florida State will look to win its 10th series overall and sixth in eight ACC weekends in 2025.
The Golden Bears (20-28, 7-19 ACC) scored their five runs on seven hits, with one in the third and four in the fifth.
FSU’s six hits were registered by six different players. That included sophomore third baseman Cal Fisher, who extended his career-long hit streak to 13 games and junior shortstop Alex Lodise, who has hit safely in four consecutive contests and reached base in 11 in a row.
Junior left-handed starter Joey Volini suffered just his third loss of the season and is now 8-3. In 5.0 innings, he allowed five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore righty John Abraham followed with 3.0 no-hit innings with five strikeouts and two walks.
Cal took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a one-out home run to left-center. A single followed with two outs before a caught stealing ended the threat.
Florida State loaded the bases with one out in the next half inning on three consecutive singles. However, a strikeout and a groundout halted the scoring opportunity. Volini then escaped a jam in the bottom of the fourth, with runners on the corners and one out, thanks to a strikeout and a groundout.
The Golden Bears added four runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 5-0. A single scored the first run, followed by a wild pitch to bring in the next. A two-run homer with two outs concluded the scoring.
Abraham struck out three in the sixth and one in the seventh. He added one more in a perfect eighth.
Fisher singled in the seventh and two had base hits in the eighth.
The penultimate weekend of the regular season will conclude with Sunday’s series finale at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT.
