TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 5 Florida State baseball team lost to No. 3 Clemson 6-3 in a rain-suspended game that started on Saturday and was completed on Sunday at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.
The loss evens the top-five series at one win apiece, with the finale set for Sunday afternoon. FSU will play for its ninth series win of the season in 11 weekends and its fifth in ACC play.
The game began on Saturday night and was suspended with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning due to lightning and continued rain. Following a 16 hour, 46 minute delay, the game concluded on Sunday afternoon.
After FSU rallied twice for a dramatic walk-off win in 11 innings on Friday night, a late rally came up short when the game resumed on Sunday. The Seminoles (32-10, 13-7 ACC) scored twice in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead and made it 3-1 in the seventh, but the Tigers (37-11, 14-9 ACC) scored three in the eighth to take a 4-3 lead as heavy rain began to fall on Saturday night. After the overnight suspension, Florida State could not get the tying or go-ahead run.
Redshirt junior left-handed starter Joey Volini pitched a career-long 8.0 innings on just 93 pitches. He held Clemson to four runs, three earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Three of Clemson’s four runs and three of its five hits came in the eighth inning after the rain arrived. Volini threw 10 or fewer pitches in five of his eight innings. He suffered just his second loss of 2025 and falls to 8-2 on the season.
Offensively, junior left fielder Gage Harrelson had two hits and two runs scored and was one of three players with an RBI. Redshirt senior catcher Nathan Cmeyla homered, his first as a Seminole and 12th of his career.
Prior to the game’s suspension, it was a scoreless game through four innings. Volini needed seven pitches in the second, six in the third and nine in the fourth, all 1-2-3 innings.
Clemson took a 1-0 lead in the fifth, as a leadoff double was followed by consecutive sacrifice bunts, the second to score the game’s first run.
Florida State answered right back with two in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead. Cmeyla led off the inning with a home run to left-center to tie the game at 1-1. Harrelson then singled and scored from second on a double by freshman first baseman Myles Bailey.
A double play groundout helped Volini throw 10 pitches in the sixth and a 1-3-6 pickoff ended a nine-pitch seventh.
After a dry first seven innings, a steady rain started to fall in the eighth inning. Meanwhile, Clemson opened the inning with a single and one-out double to put runners on second and third. With two outs, a triple to left center and fielding error brought in three runs to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.
A walk put a runner on with one out in the bottom of the eighth before a lightning strike suspended play until Sunday. On a sun-filled Sunday, a strikeout and foul out ended FSU’s scoring threat with runners on first and second.
Clemson added two runs in the top of the ninth to extend its lead to 6-3. An RBI double with an error brought in the first run before a sac fly. A double play and a groundout ended the Seminoles’ bid for a ninth-inning comeback in back-to-back games.
The three-game series will conclude with Sunday’s rubber match.
