Softball Falls in Game Two and Rain-Shortened Game Three Saturday in Columbia
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Alabama softball’s weekend in Columbia was cut short due to weather, with South Carolina winning Friday’s suspended game two, 3-1, before the third game was called due to weather in the fifth inning with the Gamecocks earning the 7-2 win to take the weekend series over the Crimson Tide.
Alabama (36-20, 12-12 SEC) fell behind South Carolina (39-14, 13-11 SEC) early Friday night after a three-run home run in the first inning from Lexi Winters. With the score still 3-0 in the top of the third, severe weather forced the teams off the field and, after a lengthy delay, the game was ultimately suspended until Saturday morning.
Upon resumption Saturday morning, Marlie Giles got the Crimson Tide on the board with a fourth inning RBI single but that was all the offense for either team as the Gamecocks held on to win, 3-1, and even the weekend series. Alabama was first on the scoreboard in game three with a second inning RBI single from Salen Hawkins but South Carolina answered right back with five runs in the bottom of the inning to swing ahead 5-1. The Tide got a run back in the third but the Gamecocks tacked on two in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, multiple lightning strikes within the eight-mile radius forced a delay of over two hours before the game was eventually called with the final score as 7-2.
