LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 4 Florida State baseball team lost the series finale at No. 19 Louisville 14-2 on Sunday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Seminoles (31-9, 12-6 ACC) suffered just their second series loss of the season, their first on the road and first against a top-25 team.

On a warm and sun-filled late afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium, the Cardinals (30-13, 12-9 ACC) scored five in the first inning before FSU fought back with two in the third to get to within three. However, UofL got both runs back in the sixth and scored seven in the seventh.

Florida State scored two runs on six hits with two errors. Louisville scored 14 runs on 11 hits with no errors.

Junior shortstop Alex Lodise had two hits and two RBI. Sophomore left-handed starter Wes Mendes allowed six runs on four hits with three strikeouts and six walks in 5.0 innings to suffer his second loss of the season. After he gave up five in the first, Mendes retired 10 of the next 11 batters he faced beginning with the final out of the first.

The Cardinals scored first for the first time this weekend with five runs in the opening inning. Two two-run home runs surrounded a solo shot. Mendes got a strikeout to end the inning and leave two on.

Mendes threw a 1-2-3 second inning on seven pitches.

Florida State responded to score two runs in the third to make it 5-2. Freshman catcher Hunter Carns led off the inning with an infield single, and a walk put two on for Lodise. He doubled down the left-field line to score both runners and make it a three run game.

A lineout ended the UofL third before Mendes retired the side in order again in the fourth. That came after FSU stranded runners on the corners in the top half.

The Seminole leadoff hitter reached for the fourth time in five innings in the fifth, but a double play ended the threat. Mendes started a 1-3-6 pickoff to help him face the minimum in the bottom half of the fifth inning.

Louisville extended its lead to 7-2 in the sixth inning. After FSU went to its bullpen, a single through the right side scored two. In the seventh, a wild pitch and RBI triple made it 9-2. With two outs, a run-scoring single and a grand slam made for the 14-2 final.

The Seminoles return home for a nationally-ranked ACC weekend at Dick Howser Stadium against currently-ranked No. 2 Clemson from May 2-4. The series begins on Friday, May 2, at 6 p.m. ET, followed by a Saturday, May 3 matchup that now will begin at 6 p.m. on the ACC Network. The Sunday finale also is adjusted to a 2 p.m. first pitch. Tickets are available at Seminoles.com/Tickets or by calling the FSU ticket office at 850-644-1830.
